David Caruso's Early Life and Interests
David Caruso was born in Forest Hills, Queens, New York. His mother, Joan, was a librarian, and his father, Charles, was a magazine and newspaper editor. David's father left when he was two years old. He grew up in a Roman Catholic family. He went to Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic School. Later, he attended Archbishop Molloy High School, graduating in 1974.
Before becoming an actor, Caruso worked as a cinema usher. He said he watched up to 80 movies a week there. He and his co-workers would often act out scenes from the films. This job helped him find his role models in actors like Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney.
David Caruso's Acting Career
Starting Out in the 1980s
David Caruso's first movie role was in 1980 in a film called Getting Wasted. He gained attention for his part as Topper Daniels in An Officer and a Gentleman (1982). For most of the 1980s, he played supporting roles in movies. These included First Blood (1982) and Twins (1988).
On television, Caruso had a recurring role on the police drama Hill Street Blues. He played Tommy Mann, a gang leader, from 1981 to 1983. He also appeared in a miniseries about the first Olympic Games in 1896. In 1986, he was in the music video for the song "Voyage, voyage" by the French singer Desireless.
Major Roles in the 1990s
In the early 1990s, Caruso continued to play police officers in films like King of New York (1990). In 1993, he got a big role as Detective John Kelly in the TV series NYPD Blue. This role earned him a Golden Globe Award.
However, Caruso left NYPD Blue after only one season. He wanted a higher salary, but the show's producers did not agree. His decision to leave a very popular show was later called one of TV's biggest "blunders" by TV Guide. After leaving, his movie roles in films like Kiss of Death and Jade did not do well. Critics gave them mixed reviews.
In 1997, Caruso returned to television. He starred in the CBS law drama Michael Hayes, but it only lasted one season.
Success with CSI: Miami in the 2000s
Caruso returned to movies in 2000 with a supporting role in Proof of Life. In 2001, he starred in the film Session 9. Critics praised his performance in this movie.
In 2002, David Caruso found his next big success. He began playing Lieutenant Horatio Caine in CSI: Miami. This show was a spin-off from the popular CSI series. Caruso became known for his character's one-liners at the start of each episode. He would often put on his sunglasses mid-sentence before the main theme music began.
The show CSI: Miami was very popular and ran for 10 seasons. It ended in 2012. David Caruso was the only actor to appear in all 232 episodes of the series.
Life After Acting
After CSI: Miami ended, David Caruso retired from acting. He became involved in the art business. He also founded DavidCarusoTelevision.tv and LexiconDigital.tv. He is also a co-owner of Steam on Sunset, a clothing store in South Miami.
