Buchanan is a small rural area in South Australia. It's located in a region called the Mid North. This area is managed by the Regional Council of Goyder. Buchanan officially became a named place in August 2000. Before that, people had used the name for a long time.

How Buchanan Got Its Name

People believe Buchanan was named after a person called Alexander Buchanan. He was the very first manager of a large farm known as Anlaby Station. However, historians are not completely sure about the exact origin of the name.

Buchanan School

Buchanan once had its own school. The school opened in 1926. It taught local children for twenty years before closing its doors in 1946.

Years later, in 1965, the old school building was sold. It became the Buchanan Hall. This hall was used by the Buchanan Agricultural Bureau. But, keeping the hall running became too expensive. So, the building was sold again in 1979.

Buchanan Cricket Club

A cricket club was formed in Buchanan in 1945. It was called the Buchanan Cricket Club. The team played in a competition called the County Eyre Association.

They played their games at different locations. Sometimes they played at Anlaby Station. Other times, they played at the Eudunda Oval. The club was quite successful! They won championships, also known as premierships, in the 1954–1955 season and again in 1964–65. Sadly, the club stopped playing in 1969.

Kooninderie Railway Station

There was an area nearby called Kooninderie. It was located right on the border between Buchanan and another place called Hansborough. The Kooninderie railway station was part of the Morgan railway line. This station was actually located on the Buchanan side of the boundary line.
