Buckhorn, Madison County, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Buckhorn is a small, quiet place in southeastern Madison County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. It's known as an unincorporated community, which means it's not a big city with its own local government. Instead, it's a collection of homes and land where people live, without a mayor or city council.

Where is Buckhorn?

Imagine three streams coming together – that's where Buckhorn is located! It sits right where the West, Middle, and East branches of Big Creek meet up. You can find this spot along Missouri Route M.

Buckhorn is also quite close to the border between Madison County and Wayne County, about 1.5 miles north of that line. Another small community called Cascade is about three miles south of Buckhorn, also along Big Creek.

How Buckhorn Got Its Name

The community of Buckhorn got its name from a nearby creek. Long ago, many deer, especially male deer with antlers (which are called 'bucks'), were often seen around that creek. Because there were so many bucks with their horns, the place became known as Buckhorn!

A post office, which is a place where people send and receive mail, was opened in Buckhorn in 1901. It helped the community for many years, handling letters and packages, until it finally closed its doors in 1959.
