Big Creek (Castor River tributary) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Big Creek is a small stream located in the southern part of Madison County and the northeastern part of Wayne County in the U.S. state of Missouri. It flows into the Castor River, meaning it's a smaller stream that joins a larger one.

Where Does Big Creek Start and Go?

Big Creek begins where two smaller streams, the East Fork Big Creek and Middle Fork Big Creek, meet. This starting point is just south of a place called Buckhorn in Madison County. You can find this spot at 37°20′03″N 90°17′35″W / 37.33417°N 90.29306°W / 37.33417; -90.29306.

From there, the stream flows towards the southeast. It runs alongside Missouri Route M, a road that goes into Wayne County. As it continues, Big Creek passes by the small communities of Cascade and Gravelton.

After passing Gravelton, the stream changes direction and flows more towards the east. Finally, it joins the Castor River. This meeting point is about half a mile from where Wayne County meets Bollinger County. The exact location is 37°17′23″N 90°13′39″W / 37.28972°N 90.22750°W / 37.28972; -90.22750.

Why is it Called Big Creek?

The name "Big Creek" was given to this stream because it is quite large compared to other smaller creeks nearby. It stands out as one of the bigger waterways in the area.
