A Look at the Chapel's History

Building the Church

This church was built a long time ago, in 1842. A talented architect named Richard Shackleton Pope designed it. It's one of the very first Baptist churches built in this unique Gothic Revival style.

Becoming Independent

The chapel calls itself an 'independent evangelical baptist' church. This means it runs on its own. It used to be part of the Baptist Union. But in 1972, the church decided to leave. They wanted to follow their own specific beliefs more closely.

Who Leads the Church?

Pastor Oliver Gross has been leading the church since December 2015. He works with other leaders called elders and deacons. These people help manage the church and its activities. There's also an associate member who helps with preaching. They especially help people from Romanian and Roma communities in Bristol.

Church Meetings and Activities

The church has several regular meetings each week. There are two services on Sundays. On Wednesdays, they have a prayer meeting and study the Bible together. Other meetings include:

  • A prayer meeting on the first Friday evening of each month.
  • A ladies' meeting every other Tuesday.
  • A men's breakfast and Bible study. This happens in homes on the second Saturday of most months.

Fun Activities for Kids and Teens

The church offers many activities for young people.

  • Sunday School: Kids can learn about the Bible during the Sunday morning service.
  • Tiger Tots: This is a group for parents and toddlers. It meets on Fridays during school terms.
  • Lighthouse Club: Children aged 9 to 12 can join this club. It also meets on Fridays during school terms.
  • Young Adults Group: Older teens and young adults meet about every other Saturday evening.

Yearly Events to Enjoy

The church also hosts exciting events throughout the year.

  • Summer Holiday Bible Club: A fun club during the summer break.
  • Christmas Carol Singing: Spreading cheer with carols during Christmas.
  • Bonfire Night Party: A special party held at a church member's home.
