Buckle Island is a remote island in the Southern Ocean. It is one of the three main islands in the Balleny Islands group. No people live on these islands. Buckle Island is about 25 kilometers (15 miles) northwest of Sturge Island. It is also 8 kilometers (5 miles) southeast of Young Island. These islands are far from land, about 110 kilometers (68 miles) from Belousov Point in Antarctica. Buckle Island is part of the Ross Dependency, an area claimed by New Zealand.

What Buckle Island Looks Like

Buckle Island has a shape like a triangle. It has long sides on the east and west. The north side is shorter. The island is about 5.5 kilometers (3 miles) wide in the north. Its longest part stretches for about 24 kilometers (13 miles).

A Volcano in the Ocean

This island was formed by a volcano. It is still an active volcano today. The last time it erupted was in 1899. This means it could erupt again in the future.

Important Spots and Nearby Islets

The very northern tip of Buckle Island is called Cape Cornish. There are also some small islands nearby. These islets are in the water between Cape Cornish and Young Island. The biggest of these small islands is Borradaile Island.

At the southern end of Buckle Island is Cape McNab. You can find more small islands there too. One of them is Sabrina Islet. There is also a tall rock formation called The Monolith. It stands about 80 meters (262 feet) high.

Home to Penguins

Both Buckle Island and Sabrina Islet are important places for penguins. Many Adélie penguins live there. You can also find chinstrap penguins on these islands. They build their nests and raise their young in these cold, remote spots.
