Exploring Bueu's Past
Ancient Times in Bueu
People have lived in the Bueu area for a very long time. Scientists have found old tools and signs of life from the Paleolithic period. This was a time when early humans used stone tools.
Later, during the Bronze Age, people built forts. You can still see remains of these forts. Some famous ones are on Ons Island, Castrillon (in Meiro), Bon (in Beluso), and A Cividade.
Roman Settlements
The Romans also lived here. They built settlements in places like Pescadoira and Meiro. Recent digs have uncovered parts of the Pescadoira settlement. In Meiro, old stone altars have been found. These altars were used to honor Roman gods called Lares.
Early Churches and Parishes
We can learn about when Bueu became a parish by looking at its old churches. A parish is like a local church district. Bueu had a church even before the 1300s.
In Beluso, records show a land transfer from the year 1008. The Church of Cela was built in the 1100s. The old Hermelo priory, which was a type of monastery, also had a church in the 1100s.
