The Ons Island (Galician: Illa de Ons; Spanish: Isla de Ons) is a cool island located in Galicia, Spain. It's the main island in a small group of islands found in the Ria de Pontevedra. Ons Island is part of the Bueu municipality.

You can easily reach the island by taking a ferry boat. Ferries leave from Bueu and other nearby towns like Portonovo, Sanxenxo, Marín, and Aldán. In 2020, a lightning strike from Subtropical Storm Alpha caused a forest fire on the island.

Exploring Ons Island

Ons Island is known for its beautiful, clear beaches. There are also several paths you can follow to explore the island.

Famous Spots to Visit

One path leads to the island's lighthouse, which offers great views. Another path takes you to a special place called Buraco do Inferno. This name means "Hell's Hole" in English. It's a deep cave that connects to the sea. When the waves crash, it sounds like a roar!

Camping and Beaches

Ons Island has the only sustainable campsite in Galicia. Here, you can enjoy camping, rent cabins, or try "glamping," which is like fancy camping. Melide beach is a popular spot located on the north side of the island.

Protecting Nature

Ons Island is a very important place for nature and wildlife. Efforts have been made to protect its unique environment.

Special Protection Area

In 2001, the European Union officially named Ons Island a Special Protection Area. This means it's a protected zone especially for birds. It helps keep their habitats safe.

National Park Status

Later, in 2002, Ons Island became part of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park. This national park also includes other islands off the coast of Pontevedra. Being a national park helps protect the island's plants, animals, and natural beauty for everyone to enjoy.
