The bull kauri (scientific name: Agathis microstachya) is a type of conifer tree. Conifers are trees that usually have needles and cones, like pine trees. This special tree belongs to the Araucariaceae family. It only grows in Australia, which means it is endemic there.
Scientists John Frederick Bailey and Cyril Tenison White first described the bull kauri in 1918. Sadly, the bull kauri is currently threatened because its natural home is being lost.

What Does the Bull Kauri Look Like?
The bull kauri is a very tall tree. It can grow up to about 50 meters high. That's as tall as a 16-story building! Its trunk can be about 2.7 meters wide.

The tree's trunk is straight and does not get much narrower towards the top. It does not have large root supports at the base. The bark of the bull kauri is rough and flaky.

The bull kauri has a very small natural area where it grows. It is mostly found in the Atherton Tableland region. This area is in Far North Queensland, Australia. These trees grow at heights between 400 and 900 meters above sea level.
What is Bull Kauri Timber Used For?
The wood from the bull kauri tree has a smooth texture. It is easy to work with and can be polished well. The inside part of the wood, called the heartwood, is a creamy or light brown color.
Wood Properties
This wood is soft and light. It has a density of about 480 kilograms per cubic meter. This means it's not very heavy for its size.
Uses of the Timber
Bull kauri timber is not very strong if it touches the ground. However, it can be used for building house frames. It is also good for making flooring inside homes.
