Bullens Pilsnerkorv (which means Bullen's pilsner sausage in English) is a famous Swedish sausage that comes in a can. It's named after a well-known actor called Erik "Bullen" Berglund. This special sausage was first sold in 1953. It became popular because it was a safe and tasty food option during a time when people were worried about food safety. Even though it's called "pilsner sausage," it has never actually contained pilsner (a type of beer). Today, a company called Scan makes these sausages.

History of Bullens Pilsnerkorv

How it Started

The first Pilsnerkorv sausages were made by the Alvesta butchery association in 1953. This happened after a big problem with food safety in Sweden. Many people got sick from a type of bacteria called salmonella. This outbreak made people very careful about buying meat products.

Because of this, the Alvesta butchery needed a way to show that their food was safe. They came up with the idea of a new, fully sterilized canned sausage. This way, people could trust that the food was safe to eat. They also decided to get a famous person to help promote it.

The Launch with a Star

The actor Erik "Bullen" Berglund was chosen to help launch the new sausage. He was not only an actor but also wrote cookbooks. He let the company use his name and his face for the new product.

Erik "Bullen" Berglund was famous for acting in "pilsnerfilm" comedies. These were popular movies in the 1930s that often showed funny situations. This is how the sausage got its unique name, Pilsnerkorv. Erik "Bullen" Berglund even helped create the recipe for the canned sausage. During the 1950s, more than thirty different food products were sold under the "Bullens" name.

Bullens Sausages Today

Out of all the "Bullens" meat products, only these canned sausages are still sold today. You can find them under two different names:

  • Bullens pilsnerkorv: This can usually has 8 sausages inside.
  • Bullens varmkorv: This is a larger can with about 40 longer sausages.

As of 2016, the company Scan produces Bullens Pilsnerkorv. The original recipe, the way it looks, and even the packaging are still the same as when it first came out. The label is yellow and black. It has the word "Bullens" and two sausages drawn in a reddish color.

How to Enjoy Bullens Sausages

These sausages are already cooked when they are put into the can. They are packed in their own liquid, which is called stock. Remember, even though it's called "pilsnerkorv," there's no pilsner in the recipe. The name comes from the old "pilsnerfilm" comedy movies.

To prepare the sausages, you should heat them slowly in their own stock. This helps them stay whole and not crack. Some people like to add a few whole allspice corns and a bay leaf for extra flavor. Erik "Bullen" Berglund himself suggested serving the sausage with a bay leaf on crispbread. Then, you can add your favorite mustard on top!
