A bulletproof vest is a special piece of clothing that helps protect people. It covers the main part of your body, like your chest, stomach, and back. This vest can stop most bullets from pistols and revolvers. It also protects against small pieces from explosions, like grenades.

How Do Bulletproof Vests Work?

Bulletproof vests are made with many layers of very strong, tightly-woven fabric. One common material is called Kevlar. Some vests also use hard, strong materials like ceramic or titanium. These materials work together to stop metal bullets or explosion fragments from going into a person's body.

When a bullet hits the vest, the strong layers spread out the force of the bullet. This stops the bullet from going through.

What Protection Do Vests Offer?

Even if a bulletproof vest stops a bullet, the person wearing it can still get hurt. The powerful hit from the bullet can feel like a very hard punch. This can cause serious bruises or even broken bones.

Vests are not perfect. A bullet from a very powerful gun, like a sniper rifle or a machine gun, can sometimes go through a bulletproof vest.

Also, a bulletproof vest only covers certain parts of the body. If a bullet hits a part of the body that the vest doesn't cover, the person can still be badly hurt or even killed.

Types of Bulletproof Vests

The bulletproof vests worn by most police officers and security guards are usually made from many layers of strong fabric like Kevlar. These are designed to be lighter and more flexible.

Vests for soldiers are often heavier and stronger. This is because soldiers need protection from more powerful bullets, like those from rifles and machine guns. Soldier vests often have hard plates made of ceramic material or strong metal like titanium. These hard plates can stop bullets from many types of powerful guns.
