Bungo Channel facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Bungo Channel (called Bungo Suidō in Japanese) is a special waterway in Japan. It's like a big natural path of water that separates two main Japanese islands: Kyūshū and Shikoku. This channel is super important because it connects the huge Pacific Ocean to the calmer Seto Inland Sea.

Where is the Bungo Channel Located?

The Bungo Channel is a strait, which is a narrow passage of water connecting two larger bodies of water. It sits between the eastern side of Kyūshū island and the western side of Shikoku island. This makes it a key link for ships traveling between the Pacific Ocean and the Seto Inland Sea.

The Hōyo Strait

Inside the Bungo Channel, there's an even narrower part called the Hōyo Strait. This is the tightest squeeze for ships. It's like the "bottleneck" of the channel.

The Bungo Channel in Pop Culture

The Bungo Channel has even appeared in movies! It was featured in a 1958 World War II submarine film called Run Silent, Run Deep. This movie is about submarines during the war. It was based on a book written by Edward L. Beach, Jr. in 1955.
