Bunker Tower is a unique stone building located on Cheaha Mountain in Cleburne County, Alabama. It serves as an observation tower, offering amazing views from the highest point in Alabama. This tower stands tall at about 2,407 feet (734 meters) above sea level.

The tower was built in a style called rustic architecture. This means it looks natural and fits in with the outdoor surroundings. It was finished in 1934 by a group called the Civilian Conservation Corps. This group helped build many parks and structures during the 1930s.

What is Bunker Tower?

Bunker Tower is a strong building made from natural stones found nearby. It was designed to let people climb up and see the beautiful landscape of Cheaha State Park. When it was first built, the first floor had offices for the park and a gift shop. These were in small sections connected to the main tower.

The Civilian Conservation Corps

The Civilian Conservation Corps (often called the CCC) was a special program in the United States. It started in 1933 during a tough economic time called the Great Depression. The CCC gave jobs to young men, helping them earn money and learn new skills.

  • These young men worked on important projects across the country.
  • They built roads, bridges, and buildings like Bunker Tower.
  • They also planted trees and helped protect natural areas.
  • The CCC played a big part in developing many of America's state and national parks.

Location and Landmarks

Bunker Tower is easy to spot on top of Mount Cheaha. It is right next to a very tall television transmitter tower. This other tower belongs to Alabama Public Television's WCIQ station. Together, these two towers act as a helpful landmark among the trees.

The tower is a significant part of Alabama's history. It was officially added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage on December 15, 1989. This means it is recognized as an important historical place in the state.
