The History of Burgess
How Burgess Got Its Name
Burgess wasn't always called Burgess! It was first named Marlow. This was after John W. Marlow, who became the first postmaster on May 6, 1880.
Over the years, a few different people served as postmaster. Finally, William Burgess took over on April 16, 1887. He was the postmaster for a very long time, until he passed away in 1934.
William Burgess successfully changed the community's name to Burgess on August 15, 1906.
Burgess Community Growth
In the late 1890s, Burgess was mainly a farming community. Many people lived and worked on farms.
The community has grown a lot since then. In 1990, about 3,000 people lived in Burgess. By 2010, the population had jumped to around 25,000!
Burgess has changed from a quiet, rural area to a more suburban place in the last 20 years. Many new neighborhoods have been built, like TPC, Blackmoor, and Laurel Woods.
Even with all this growth, some large areas of land are still undeveloped. These areas help Burgess keep some of its original rural feel.
Burgess also has a community center. It's called the Burgess Community Center. You can find it on South Carolina Highway 707, close to Mt. Zion Church. It's also near St. James Middle School and St. James High School.
