About Burlingham
Burlingham is located in the northern part of Bedford Township. It sits in the state of Ohio, within Meigs County. The community is known for its unique nickname and a fun story behind it.
The Story of "Bungtown"
Burlingham has a very interesting nickname: "Bungtown." This name came about in the late 1800s. The story goes that the women in the community were quite upset. Their husbands were spending too much time at the local saloon.
To show their displeasure, the women took matters into their own hands. They went to the saloon and removed the "bungs" from the barrels. A bung is a stopper used to seal a barrel. When the bungs were removed, the contents of the barrels spilled out everywhere. This big mess caused the saloon to be damaged and eventually closed down.
Bungtown's Legacy Today
The nickname "Bungtown" lives on even today! It inspired the name of the Bungtown Salsa Company. This company makes delicious salsas and hot sauces. It is located in a nearby community called Shade, Ohio.
One of their hot sauces is even named "Fatalii Saloon Burner." This name is a fun nod to the old story of the saloon in Burlingham. It shows how a local legend can become part of a modern business.
