History of Burlington
Burlington became an official town in 1824. However, it is now an "unincorporated" area. This means it doesn't have its own city government anymore. Its city charter was canceled in 1923. It is one of only two county seats in Kentucky that are unincorporated.
The town started on 74 acres of land. This land was given by John Craig and Robert Johnson. It was first called Craig's Camp. Then, in 1800, it was renamed Wilmington. In 1816, the U.S. Post Office asked for another name change. That's when it became Burlington.
The first courthouse was a log building from 1801. The town was planned out in the same year. Streets were designed to circle a central "Publick Square." This original town plan is very important. It helped Burlington become a historic district. The Burlington Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
