A Look Back at Burnside's History
How Burnside Got Its Name
Burnside wasn't always called Burnside! When it was first created on June 16, 1856, it was named Buchanan. Later, its name was changed to Hesperia.
A post office opened in Burnside in 1875. Back then, it was an important stop for stagecoaches. Stagecoaches were like old-fashioned buses pulled by horses. They carried people and mail between towns like Boone, Iowa and Humboldt, Iowa.
The community got its current name in 1882. This happened when the first train from the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railway passed through. The train's conductor was a friend of a famous general named Ambrose Burnside. General Burnside had recently passed away. So, the town was renamed in his honor.
Burnside's Population Over Time
Burnside has always been a small community. In 1902, about 63 people lived there. By 1940, the population had grown slightly to 83 people.
