The area where Burr Oak is located was first settled in 1835. This was a long time ago! The first post office opened its doors in 1837.

The village itself was officially planned out in 1851. A year later, in 1852, a man named William Lock gave land for a railroad station. He had one condition: the town had to be called "Lock's Station." So, for five years, it was known by this new name.

However, people really liked the original name, "Burr Oak." So, in 1857, the town went back to its first name. It officially became an incorporated village in 1859.
