Burrator is a special kind of local government area called a grouped parish council in the beautiful English county of Devon. It's completely inside the Dartmoor National Park, which is a protected area known for its wild moorlands and granite hills. Burrator was created in June 2018 by joining three older local councils: Meavy, Sheepstor, and Walkhampton.

What is Burrator?

Burrator is a large area, covering about 59.45 square kilometers (that's about 23 square miles!). It's one of the least crowded places in Devon. In 2011, about 1,445 people lived there. This area includes the villages of Dousland, Meavy, Sheepstor, and Walkhampton. It's also home to the important Burrator Reservoir, which provides drinking water for the city of Plymouth.

Burrator's Twin Town

Did you know Burrator has a "twin town"? It's a town called Mathieu in Normandy, France. Twinning means two towns or regions agree to promote cultural and commercial ties. It's a way for people from different countries to learn about each other!

The Name Burrator

The name "Burrator" comes from a big granite rock formation called Burra Tor. A "tor" is a large, free-standing rock outcrop that rises from the ground, often found on hills. Burra Tor is located near the southern end of the Burrator Reservoir, close to where the dams block the River Meavy and Sheepstor Brook. It's a cool natural landmark!

A Famous Person Connected to Burrator

A famous historical figure named James Brooke died in Burrator. He was known as the first white Rajah of Sarawak. A Rajah is like a ruler or king, and Sarawak is a region on the island of Borneo. James Brooke had an interesting life, becoming a ruler in a faraway land before returning to England.
