Burrell, California was once a small community in Santa Cruz County. It was located high up in the Santa Cruz Mountains. This area is about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) south-southeast of a place called Wrights.

Discovering Burrell, California

Burrell was named after Lyman Jabez Burrell. He was one of the first people to settle there in the early 1850s. The community had a school called Burrell School, which was later closed.

Early Life and Important People

A hotel in the area was run by James Richard Wright. His son, John Vincent Wright, was honored when a nearby train station was named Wright's Station. This station became more commonly known as Wrights.

Where Was Burrell Located?

The settlement of Burrell was found at a specific spot on a map. Its coordinates were 37 degrees, 7 minutes, 18 seconds North (latitude) and 121 degrees, 55 minutes, 47 seconds West (longitude). In simpler terms, this is 37.12167 degrees North and -121.92972 degrees West. Today, this historic site is where Summit Road and Loma Prieta Avenue meet.

Burrell Today: A New Purpose

Today, the original site of Burrell has a new life. The old school building has been restored. It is now part of the Burrell School Winery and Vineyards.

The Vineyards and Their Location

David and Anne Moulton started planting grapevines here in 1973. The vineyards are located at an elevation of about 1,600 feet (488 meters). They face southwest, which is good for growing grapes. The soil in this area is a mix of loam and shale. This is because the site is very close to the San Andreas Fault, a major crack in the Earth's crust.

Growing Grapes at Burrell

The first types of grapes planted were Chardonnay and Merlot. In 2002, Pinot Noir grapes were also added. The vineyard uses older Cletrac tractors for farming tasks like tilling and spraying. All other work, such as pruning the vines and picking the grapes, is done carefully by hand.
