The Burton House is a special old house in Newberry, South Carolina, United States. It was built around 1857, just before the American Civil War. This house looks like a grand country home, even though it's in the city. It has many beautiful details from a style called Neoclassical.
Even though the house changed hands a few times early on, the Burton family owned it for about 100 years. Today, the Burton House is known as a historic site, meaning it's an important place from the past.

What Does It Look Like?
The Burton House is a two-story building made of wood. It's designed to look like a big plantation house. The front of the house has a large, welcoming porch called a portico.
Front Porch Details
The portico has square wooden pillars that hold up each floor. There are also flat columns, called pilasters, where the porch meets the house. On the second floor, a fancy railing, known as a balustrade, fills the space between the pillars.
Above the main front door and the second-floor door, you'll see special windows called transom lights. These windows often have many small panes of glass. There are also tall, narrow windows, called sidelights, on either side of the main entrance.
Roof and Size
The house has a gabled roof, which means it slopes down on two sides. The roof comes to a point, forming a triangle shape called a pediment right above the front porch.
The whole house is quite large, covering almost 5,000 square feet (460 m2). About 4,000 square feet (370 m2) of this space is finished and ready to live in. Inside, there are three fireplaces, which would have kept the house warm long ago. The house also has a crawlspace underneath it.
A Look at Its History
We don't know the exact day the Burton House was finished, but it was built around 1857.
Early Owners
From 1856 to 1858, a man named William Walter Houseal owned the property. He was an important merchant in Newberry and even held local government jobs.
The Burton Family Era
About 30 years after Houseal sold the house, James A. Burton bought it. James Burton was in the business of selling insurance. Records from 1921 show that he sold both real estate and fire insurance from his office on Caldwell Street, while still living in the house on Glenn Street.
The Burton family kept the house for many years, right up until the 1980s. After that, it was sold to other owners.
A Historic Landmark
In November 1980, the Burton House was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of places in the United States that are important because of their history or special design. The house was recognized for its amazing architecture.
It was part of a group of buildings in Newberry that were all added to the National Register at the same time. The Burton House is one of 24 historic places in and around Newberry that are on this important national list.
