Bury Castle is an ancient hill fort from the Iron Age. It is located near Selworthy in Somerset, England. This special site has been protected as an ancient monument.
History of Bury Castle
Imagine living thousands of years ago! People built Bury Castle on a high piece of land. This spot gave them a great view of everything around. It was easy to see if anyone was coming.
The fort itself wasn't huge. It covered about 0.2 hectares (half an acre) inside. It had a strong wall, called a rampart, and a deep ditch around it. The sides facing north, east, and south were very steep. This made it hard for enemies to attack.
The main wall was about 1.6 meters (around 5 feet) high. The ditch was about 2 meters (around 6.5 feet) deep. On the west side, there was another wall and ditch. These walls were made of dry stone, meaning no cement was used.
Bury Castle Today
Bury Castle is now a "Scheduled Ancient Monument." This means it's a very important historical site. The National Trust, a charity that looks after special places, owns it.
Sometimes, plants and trees grow too much on the old walls. This can damage the fort. Because of this, Bury Castle is on the Heritage at Risk Register. This list helps make sure important sites get the care they need.
