Bury Ditches facts for kids
Bury Ditches is an ancient hill fort found in the Shropshire Hills of central England. It was built long ago during the British Iron Age. You can find it between the towns of Clun and Bishop's Castle.
What is Bury Ditches?
Bury Ditches is a really cool example of an old hill fort. It's shaped like a neat oval and sits right on top of a hill called Sunnyhill. To protect it, the people who built it created up to four big ditches and banks of earth. These are called earthworks. It also has two entrance ways that are still in good shape today.
Exploring the Site
This amazing site is surrounded by pine trees planted by the Forestry Commission. However, big storms in the 1970s and 1980s cleared the trees from the very top of the hill. This means you can now enjoy wide-open views in every direction!
It's easy to visit Bury Ditches. There's a car park nearby, and it's just a short walk uphill to reach the top.
Amazing Views and Walks
From the top of Bury Ditches, you can see far across the countryside. You'll spot other famous places like the Long Mynd and Corndon Hill. You can also see many other parts of the beautiful Shropshire Hills.
If you love walking, you're in luck! There are special walking paths that cross right over the site. Other paths, like the Shropshire Way and Jack Mytton Way, pass below the hill fort. The Wild Edric's Way also goes right next to it.
