Explore the Bush House Museum
The Bush House and the park were built a long time ago, between 1877 and 1878. They belonged to a man named Asahel Bush. He started the Oregon Statesman newspaper and a bank.
In 1882, Asahel Bush added a special glass building called a conservatory for his daughters. People say it was the first greenhouse west of the Mississippi River! Today, it's still there and filled with plants from that time.
The City of Salem owns the house. It has been open to the public since 1953. Now, the Salem Art Association runs it as the Bush House Museum. The museum shows what homes looked like during the Victorian era. You can see old furniture and original wallpapers. Guided tours are available from Wednesday to Sunday, and there is no cost to enter.
Discover Art at the Bush Barn Art Center
The old barn on the estate, which once stored farm tools, is now the Bush Barn Art Center. The Salem Art Association also runs this art center.
The center has two art galleries. The A.N. Bush Gallery shows art from artists all over the world. The smaller Focus Gallery features artists from the local area. There is also a crafts gallery where you can buy handmade items. Admission to the art center is free.
Every year, usually on the third weekend of July, the Art Association hosts the Salem Art Fair and Festival in the park. It's a big event with lots of art and fun activities!
Fun Things to Do at Bush's Pasture Park
Bush's Pasture Park offers many things to do outdoors. You can walk or run on the trails. There are also picnic areas for lunch and playgrounds for younger kids. If you like sports, you'll find tennis courts.
The park has beautiful natural areas with old Oregon white oak trees. You can also see cherry and apple orchards. A lovely rose garden with over 2,000 roses is another highlight.
Willamette University has its sports fields in the park. These include McCulloch Stadium for football and track, and Spec Keene Stadium for baseball. These fields host university games and community events. For example, the Salem Jaycees' Kids Relays happen here.
The park even has a special track for soap box derby races! The Salem Soap Box Derby takes place here. You might also see downhill skateboarding events.
The park is open every day for everyone to enjoy.
