Moses Buster Drayton (born March 2, 1952 – died November 20, 2022) was an American boxer. He became a world champion in the IBF light middleweight division. This weight class is for boxers who weigh up to 154 pounds. Drayton started his professional boxing career in 1978.

Buster Drayton: A Boxing Champion

Buster Drayton became a world champion in 1986. He won the IBF light middleweight title by beating Carlos Santos. This was a big win for him. He successfully defended his title two times. However, he lost it the next year to Matthew Hilton.

In 1988, Drayton fought Julian Jackson. Jackson held the WBA light middleweight title. Drayton lost this fight in the third round. He retired from professional boxing in 1995. At that time, he was 43 years old. His final record was 40 wins, 15 losses, and 1 draw. He won 28 of his fights by knockout.

Military Service and Early Life

Before becoming a boxer, Drayton served his country. He joined the United States Marines in 1972. He worked hard and rose to the rank of Sergeant. In 2016, a group called the National Federation of Black Veterans honored him for his service. This showed how much his military career was appreciated.

Return to the Ring for Fun

Even after retiring, Buster Drayton still loved boxing. He returned to the ring for a special exhibition match in 2012. He was 57 years old at the time. This event took place in Philadelphia. He fought against Floyd 'Sugar Boy' Richards. Interestingly, both Drayton and Richards had worked as police officers. They both served at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Philadelphia.

Drayton's long career in boxing was impressive. He was younger than some other famous boxers who fought in exhibition matches at older ages. For example, the legendary heavyweight champion Jack Johnson had a charity exhibition fight at age 66. Another boxer, Saoul Mamby, had a professional fight at 60.

His Legacy

Buster Drayton passed away on November 20, 2022. He was 70 years old. He will be remembered as a dedicated boxer and a world champion. His career showed his strength and passion for the sport.
