A Look Back at the Butcher Shop

Early Days of Yungaburra

This butcher shop was built around 1922. It was likely built for the Williams family business. They owned several shops near the Yungaburra railway station back then.

The Atherton Tableland area first attracted people looking for timber and minerals. But soon, people realised the rich soil and cool weather were great for farming. In 1885, a plan called the Village Settlement scheme started. It offered farmers land and home sites grouped together in a village.

In 1888, a village was set up at Allumbah Pocket, which later became Yungaburra. Around the same time, a railway line was being built from Cairns to the Tableland. This railway would make it much easier to get goods to and from the area.

How the Town Grew

The first farms in Allumbah started in 1891. The railway reached Mareeba in 1895 and Atherton in 1903. This greatly improved travel and trade. More people moved to the area after new land laws in the early 1900s.

The land where the butcher shop stands was first farmed in 1899. It was later divided into smaller blocks in 1910. The new railway station changed where the town's main shops were located. Buildings were either built new or moved closer to the railway. The Williams family bought land near the station in 1911 for a new hotel. They continued to buy more land nearby.

The Williams Family's Role

The Williams family played a big part in Yungaburra's growth. H.S. Williams started a store and butchery in another area before moving to Allumbah in 1898. After he passed away in 1905, his sons continued the family business.

In 1907, they set up a small hotel for railway workers. By 1910, the railway line reached the settlement. The town was renamed Yungaburra to avoid confusion with another town. The railway brought a boom, with a saw mill, a store, a large hotel, and many other shops and houses being built.

The Shop's Long History

By 1923, the Williams family business ran a store, a bakery, and the butcher shop. They likely built these shops around the same time. In 1926, the Gillies Highway opened. This made Yungaburra a popular stop for tourists visiting the nearby lakes. This brought another period of growth to the town.

The butcher shop was sold in 1975. It changed owners a few times before the current butcher bought it in 1992. Even with modern equipment inside, the shop still looks and works much like it did when it was first built. It has been a butcher shop continuously since 1922!

What the Butcher Shop Looks Like

The butcher's shop is a single-storey building made of timber. It has a steeply sloped roof covered with corrugated iron. The front of the building faces the street and has a square timber wall at the top, called a parapet.

A roofed area, called an awning, sticks out over the front of the shop. It is held up by timber posts with decorative supports. This awning roof also wraps around both sides of the building. These side areas have been closed in to make more space.

On the left side, the extension is made of timber boards with adjustable window slats (louvres) above. There's a brick section at the back left corner. The right side extension uses spaced timber slats at the front and other materials further back.

You enter the shop through a pair of doors in the middle. There used to be windows on either side, but the one on the right is now blocked. The window on the left and the window above the door have a strong mesh inside.

Inside, there's a public area with a tiled floor and a counter. To the right, you'll find a cold room for keeping meat fresh. At the back of the building is a work area with a concrete floor. The enclosed section on the left side is used as an office. Behind the office is a small brick room, once a strong room, now used for storage. The enclosed section on the right side is also used for storage.

Why This Shop is Special

The Butchers Shop was added to the Queensland Heritage Register in 1992 because it meets several important rules.

Showing Queensland's Past

This butcher shop is an early business that provided an important service. It shows how Yungaburra grew into a key town for the Tablelands. This happened after the railway arrived in 1910 and a road link to the coast opened in 1920. These transport links helped farming and tourism grow in the area.

A Great Example of Its Kind

The butcher's shop is a good and well-preserved example of a simple timber commercial building. These types of buildings were common in new settlements. It's also special because it has always been used as a butcher shop.

Its Beautiful Look

The way the shop is built, its size, and its details make it a big part of Yungaburra's unique character. It adds to the charm of the town.

Connected to the Community

This building was part of the Williams Estate. This means the butcher shop has an important connection to the Williams family. They played a major role in helping Yungaburra grow and develop its businesses.
