Butler is a village in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, United States. In 2020, about 1,787 people lived there. It is known as "Train Town USA" because of its strong connection to railroads.

History of Butler

The village of Butler started because of the railroad. In the fall of 1909, a railway company bought land from farmers. They wanted to build large train yards near Milwaukee. These new yards helped reduce traffic in the busy downtown Milwaukee rail yards.

This new area was first called "New Butler." The village was likely named after William Butler. He was a large landowner in the area who came from England in the 1840s.

In 1911, the settlement of "New Butler" officially began in Waukesha County. Railroad workers and their families were the first people to live there. On May 5, 1913, the community officially became a village with about 200 people. It was formed from parts of the towns of Brookfield and Menomonee.

As more railroad activities started, the village grew. People bought land to build new homes and businesses. In 1926, the word "New" was removed, and the village became known simply as Butler.
