The History of Menomonee
How Menomonee Began
The town of Menomonee was first created in December 1839. At that time, it was part of Milwaukee County. This area was known as the Wisconsin Territory, before Wisconsin became a state. Menomonee was formed from the eastern part of an older town called Lisbon.
Later, on January 31, 1846, Menomonee became part of the newly formed Waukesha County.
Menomonee Becomes New Villages
Over many years, parts of the town of Menomonee were used to create new villages. These new villages became their own separate communities.
- In 1892, a part of Menomonee became the village of Menomonee Falls.
- Then, in 1913, another part became the village of Butler.
- Finally, in 1930, the village of Lannon was created from another section of Menomonee.
The End of Menomonee as a Town
The very last remaining parts of the town of Menomonee were officially joined with the village of Menomonee Falls in 1958. This meant that the town of Menomonee no longer existed as its own separate government area. Its land became part of other villages.
