History of Lisbon, Wisconsin
The first person to settle in the area that became Lisbon was Thomas S. Redford. He claimed 160 acres of land in 1836. The area officially became the Town of Lisbon in 1838. This was ten years before Wisconsin became a state.
The original boundaries of Lisbon were much larger. They included areas that are now Pewaukee, Brookfield, and Menomonee Falls. These places later became separate towns in 1839. The first meeting of the Lisbon town government happened on April 15, 1842. It took place in what would become the Lisbon Plank Schoolhouse.
The village of Sussex was started in the middle of the town in 1924. Over time, Sussex took over parts of the Town of Lisbon. For much of its history, Lisbon's economy depended on farms and stone quarries. Even today, a type of rock called Lannon stone is still mined here. This stone is a kind of dolomitic limestone that was left behind by glaciers. Gravel is also dug up in the area.
Lisbon tried to become an official village in 2011 and again in 2020. Finally, the state approved their efforts to hold a vote. This vote happened in January 2023. Residents voted to become a village, and the state officially recognized it in February 2023.
