Butrint is an ancient city in Epirus. It was first a Greek city, then later a Roman city. Today, it is one of the most important archaeological sites in Albania.
Butrint has a long and interesting history. It is also very important for its cultural and natural value. Because of this, UNESCO made Butrint a World Heritage Site in 1992. It also became a National Park in 2000.
Butrint was once a city of the Chaonians, an ancient Greek tribe from Epirus. The city started to decline in Late Antiquity, which was the end of the Roman Empire. It was later abandoned during the Middle Ages. This happened after a big earthquake flooded much of the city.
Today, Butrint is an archeological site in Vlorë County, Albania. It is about 14 kilometers south of Sarandë. It is also very close to the Greek border. The site sits on a hill that looks over the Vivari Channel. It is part of the Butrint National Park.
How to Visit Butrint
Butrint is easy to reach from the city of Sarandë. The road to Butrint was first built in 1959. This was for a visit by the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev. The road was made better in the summer of 2010.
Building the road caused some environmental problems. At one point, it put Butrint's World Heritage Site status at risk. However, the ancient city is now a very popular place for tourists to visit. Many people come for day trips from the nearby Greek island of Corfu.
Traveling from Corfu
You can travel between Corfu and Sarandë by boat. Fast boats called hydrofoils take about 30 minutes. Slower ferries take about 90 minutes. These boats run every day from the New Port in Corfu Town to Sarandë.
Many visitors from Corfu use special bus services to get to Butrint from Sarandë. There is also a regular public bus service that runs between Sarandë port and Butrint.
Other Ways to Arrive
Some visitors come from the Qafe Bote border crossing with Greece. This crossing is near Konispol. From there, they cross the Vivari Channel using a cable ferry right at Butrint.
