History of Butteville
Butteville was started in the 1840s. It was founded by people from the Methodist Mission. This mission helped settle the Oregon Territory.
The community was once an important stop for steamboats. These boats traveled on the Willamette River. Butteville's economy was strongest in the 1850s. It was a busy shipping center.
Butteville competed with nearby Champoeg, Oregon for river trade. Both towns shipped goods from the surrounding French Prairie. Many of Butteville's first residents were French-Canadian.
