History of Byars
The town of Byars is located about one mile southeast of an older place called Camp Arbuckle. Before Byars was founded, there was a community nearby called Johnsonville. It was named after a local rancher, Montford Johnson.
In 1903, a railroad company, the Oklahoma Central Railroad, wanted to build a new community. They chose a spot about a mile south of Johnsonville. Katie Byars and her husband, Nathan H. Byars, owned land there. They decided to donate their land for the new town, even though some of their neighbors in Johnsonville didn't like the idea.
A post office opened in the new town on April 9, 1903, and it was named Byars. The town officially became a city in 1906. The railroad line reached Byars in July 1908. When Oklahoma became a state in 1907, Byars had a population of 537 people.
