Byram is a small, unincorporated community located in Kingwood Township, within Hunterdon County, in the state of New Jersey. An unincorporated community means it's a place with a shared identity but without its own local government.

A Look at Byram's Past

Byram has an interesting history, especially concerning its connections to other places and how people traveled.

The Byram Bridge

Back in 1855, a special bridge was built across the Delaware River. This bridge connected Byram to a town called Point Pleasant, Pennsylvania on the other side of the river. It was known as the Point Pleasant-Byram Bridge. For many years, this bridge helped people and goods move between New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

However, in 1955, a huge natural disaster struck. A very strong storm called Hurricane Diane caused the "Great Flood of 1955." The flood waters were so powerful that they completely destroyed the bridge. It was never rebuilt after that.

The Railroad Connection

Byram also used to have its own train station. This station was part of the Belvidere Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad. The train line reached Byram in 1852, and the station opened around that time. Trains were a very important way to travel and transport goods back then.

Sadly, like the bridge, Byram's train station was also destroyed during the Great Flood of 1955. It was never rebuilt. The railroad continued to be used for carrying freight (goods) until 1978. After that, the tracks were no longer used and were removed in the early 1980s. The old railroad path was then turned into a fun recreational trail for people to enjoy.
