Byron Moreno's Referee Career
Byron Moreno was a well-known football referee. He was part of many important matches during his career. Referees are very important in football because they make sure the game is fair and that players follow the rules.
The 2002 FIFA World Cup
One of the most talked-about matches Moreno refereed was during the 2002 FIFA World Cup. On June 18, he was the referee for a round of 16 match between Italy and co-hosts South Korea. This was a very exciting game that went into extra time.
After Italy lost the match 2–1, some people criticized Moreno's decisions. For example, he awarded South Korea a penalty in the first half. He also disallowed a goal by Italy's Damiano Tommasi, saying it was offside. Another moment that caused discussion was when he showed a second yellow card to Francesco Totti, which meant Totti had to leave the game.
Later Career and Retirement
In September 2002, a few months after the World Cup, Moreno faced some issues in a match between L.D.U. Quito and Barcelona S.C. He made some errors with the game's timing. Because of this, Ecuadorian football authorities suspended him for twenty matches. FIFA also looked into his performance during this time.
In May 2003, after returning from his suspension, Moreno was again suspended for one match. This happened after he sent off three players from Deportivo Quito in a game against Deportivo Cuenca. The following month, in June 2003, Byron Moreno decided to retire from refereeing. He mentioned that low performance scores were a reason for his decision.
