Cóbano is a special area called a district. It is part of the Puntarenas canton. This canton is located in the Puntarenas province of Costa Rica.

A Look Back: Cóbano's Story

For a long time, the entire Nicoya Peninsula was part of a different area. This area was called the Partido de Nicoya. Today, that area is known as Guanacaste.

At the start of the 1900s, something changed. The president of Costa Rica, Alfredo González Flores, made a new rule. This rule moved Cóbano, along with nearby towns like Lepanto and Paquera, to the Puntarenas province.

Why did this happen? Back then, it was much faster to travel by boat. It was quicker to reach Paquera from Puntarenas by sea. Traveling by land to Nicoya was very slow.

Today, some people in Guanacaste want the Nicoya peninsula back. They say that a big road, the Inter-American Highway, makes land travel easy now. They also believe that the name Guanacaste helps with tourism. They think more tourists would visit the southern beaches if they were part of Guanacaste.

Cóbano officially became its own district on August 4, 1971. It was separated from the Paquera District at that time.
