Béatrice Mireille Martin (born 22 September 1989), known by her stage name Cœur de pirate (which means Pirate's Heart in French), is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and pianist. She is from Montreal, Canada, and mostly sings in French. Many people say she has helped introduce French songs to a new generation of young people in Quebec.
Career
Starting Out
Béatrice Martin began playing the piano when she was just three years old. When she was nine, she started studying music at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal. She continued her studies there for five years.
At age 15, she played keyboards in a band called December Strikes First. Later, she also played keyboards for another band, Bonjour Brumaire, for a short time.
First Album and Big Success (2007–2009)
Béatrice chose the name "Cœur de pirate" because she wanted to sound like a band, not just one musician. She first thought of calling herself "Her Pirate Heart" in English, but then changed it to French.
Her first album, also called Cœur de pirate, came out on September 16, 2008. The music on the album was simple, mostly featuring her voice and piano.
In 2009, she became very well-known when a photographer used her song "Ensemble" in a popular video on YouTube. The video, called "Time lapse of a baby playing with his toys," was seen by many people and helped her music reach a wider audience.
Other Music Projects (2009–2011)
In 2009, Béatrice released an English song called "One for Me" under the name Pearls. She later said this project was just for fun.
She also worked with Jay Malinowski from the band Bedouin Soundclash. They formed a group called Armistice and released a five-song album in 2011.
New Albums and Projects (2011–present)
Béatrice released her second album, Blonde, on November 7, 2011. The songs "Adieu" and "Golden Baby" were popular from this album.
In 2012, she took a break from touring because she was expecting a baby. Her daughter was born in September of that year. She returned to music in 2013 with a new music video and a tour.
Béatrice has also created music for TV shows and video games. In 2014, she composed the soundtrack for the video game Child of Light. This soundtrack included an English song called "Off to Sleep."
In 2015, she released the single "Carry On" in both English and French. Both versions were on her album Roses. Later that year, she signed a record deal with Cherrytree Records and Interscope Records, which helped her music reach even more people.
She continued to release new music, including the albums En cas de tempête, ce jardin sera fermé in 2018, Perséides in 2021, and Impossible à aimer also in 2021.
In 2020, Béatrice was a coach on the TV show La Voix, which is like The Voice in Canada. Her artist, Josiane Comeau, won the season!
Collaborations
Cœur de pirate has worked with many other artists. She performed a duet of the song "Umbrella" with French singer Julien Doré. They also recorded a new version of her song "Pour un infidèle" together.
She sang on the song "Brutal Hearts" for the band Bedouin Soundclash in 2010. She also contributed vocals to a song on David Usher's album The Mile End Sessions.
Béatrice also worked with Simple Plan on their song "Jet Lag". She recorded a demo version with her voice, but the final song featured another singer.
She has also collaborated with artists like Peter Peter, Nouvelle Vague, Lights, and the punk band Against Me!. In 2023, she was featured on a remix of "Dernière danse" by the French band Kyo.
Personal life
On 26 July 2012, Béatrice Martin married tattoo artist Alex Peyrat. Their daughter, Romy, was born on 4 September 2012. They later divorced, but remarried in 2017 before divorcing again in 2018.
On 17 August 2021, Béatrice announced she was expecting her second child with her partner, Marc Flynn. Their son, Arlo, was born on 16 January 2022.
She has shared that she has generalized anxiety disorder and ADHD.
