Musical Journey
How It All Began
Born in the province of Quebec, Béatrice Martin began playing the piano when she was just three years old. At age nine, she started studying at a famous music school, the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal, and stayed there for five years.
When she was 15, she was the keyboardist for a band called December Strikes First. She also briefly played keyboards for another band, Bonjour Brumaire, from 2007 to 2008.
2007–2009: A Star Is Born
Martin chose the name "Cœur de pirate" because she wanted to feel like part of a band, not just a solo musician. She released her first album, Cœur de pirate, on September 16, 2008. The album's music was simple, focusing on her voice and piano skills.
In February 2009, she became famous in a very modern way. A photographer used her song "Ensemble" in a viral video on YouTube. The video showed a baby playing with toys in time-lapse. It was a huge hit and was featured on TV shows like Good Morning America and popular websites.
2009–2011: New Projects
In 2009, Martin appeared on the CBC Radio show Q. She performed her hit song "Ensemble" and a new song, "Place de la République".
She also worked with Jay Malinowski from the band Bedouin Soundclash. They formed a group called Armistice and released a five-song album in 2011.
2011–Present: Continued Success
Martin released her second album, Blonde, on November 7, 2011. It included popular songs like "Adieu" and "Golden Baby".
In 2013, she released a soundtrack album for the Canadian TV show Trauma. The following year, she composed the music for the Ubisoft Montreal video game Child of Light. This soundtrack included a song in English called "Off to Sleep".
Her next album, Roses, came out in 2015 and featured songs in both English and French. After this album, she signed a record deal with American labels Cherrytree Records and Interscope Records, which helped her reach a wider audience.
On June 1, 2018, she released En cas de tempête, ce jardin sera fermé. This album was very personal and explored themes of healing. It was nominated for a Juno Award.
In 2020, Martin was a coach on the TV show La Voix, the Quebec version of The Voice. Her singer, Josiane Comeau, won the competition.
She released two albums in 2021. The first, Perséides, was an album of piano solos. The second, Impossible à aimer, won the Juno Award for Francophone Album of the Year in 2022.
Working with Other Artists
Cœur de pirate has worked with many other musicians. She sang a duet of Rihanna's song "Umbrella" with French singer Julien Doré. She also recorded a new version of her song "Pour un infidèle" with him.
She sang on the song "Brutal Hearts" by the band Bedouin Soundclash. She also co-wrote the song "Jet Lag" with the band Simple Plan. She has also collaborated with artists like Lights and the French band Kyo.
Personal Life
Béatrice Martin has two children. Her daughter, Romy, was born on September 4, 2012. Her son, Arlo, was born on January 16, 2022.
Martin has shared that she has generalized anxiety disorder and ADHD.
