Flight Simulators: Learning to Fly Safely
CAE creates and sells flight simulators. These are special machines that help pilots practice flying without leaving the ground. They also make other training devices. CAE sells these to airlines, airplane makers, and training centers.
Types of Simulators
CAE makes different kinds of simulators. Some are basic training tools like the CAE 400XR and CAE 500XR. Others are full-motion products, like the CAE 3000, CAE 5000, and CAE 7000XR. These advanced simulators move and feel just like a real airplane. They are used for training pilots for commercial flights. In 2016, CAE sold 53 of these large, full-flight simulators.
Growing Through Acquisitions
CAE has grown by buying other companies. In 2001, they bought a flight simulation and training part of BAE Systems. This company was called Reflectone Inc. It started in 1939 and sold simulators to the military.
Later, in 2021, CAE bought military training businesses from L3Harris Technologies. This included Link Simulation & Training. This company has a history with the very first flight simulators ever made by Ed Link.
Pilot Training: Helping Pilots Learn and Grow
CAE runs pilot training programs. They train pilots for airlines and for business jets. They have over 50 aviation training centers all around the world.
Training Centers in the United States
In the United States, CAE trains pilots for airlines like JetBlue. They also train pilots for charter and cargo companies. In 2001, CAE bought Simuflite training centers in Dallas, Texas, and Morristown, New Jersey. These are now called CAE SimuFlite. The Dallas center is very big. It's the largest business aviation training center in the world. It has 34 simulators and about 450 employees.
Expanding Training Options
In 2016, CAE bought another training company called Lockheed Martin Commercial Flight Training. This company used to be known as Sim-Industries.
CAE also runs the CAE Oxford Aviation Academy. This is the biggest network for training new pilots from the very beginning. They have over 220 training aircraft and seven campuses worldwide. They also operate CAE Global Academy Phoenix and Sabena Flight Academy in Belgium.
Since 2020, CAE has also worked with Airways Aviation Academy in France. This helps train students from their Oxford and Brussels programs.
Healthcare: Training Medical Professionals
In 2011, CAE bought Medical Education Technologies Inc. (METI). This company was known for its patient simulator called the HPS. These simulators help doctors and nurses practice medical procedures safely. In 2023, CAE announced that it would sell its Healthcare business.
