About CHYF-FM Radio
CHYF-FM is also known as GIMA Radio. It's a non-profit station, which means it doesn't try to make money. Instead, it focuses on serving its community.
How CHYF-FM Got Started
To start a radio station in Canada, you need permission from a group called the CRTC. The CRTC makes sure that radio and TV stations follow the rules. GIMA Radio got their approval to use the 88.9 MHz frequency on June 17, 2010.
First Broadcast and Special Tributes
After getting approval, the station began testing its equipment on August 23, 2010. Just two days later, on August 25, 2010, they held a special celebration for their first official broadcast. This event honored Carl Beam, a very important artist from the M'Chigeeng First Nation. The celebration took place at the Neon Raven Art Gallery, which was also Carl Beam's home.
Helping Languages Grow
In 2015, GIMA Radio had a big relaunch. This event brought new hope for a "language renaissance." A language renaissance means a time when people work to bring back and strengthen their traditional languages. For GIMA Radio, this means helping to keep Indigenous languages alive and well in the community.
Changes in Ownership
Sometimes, the ownership of a radio station can change. On November 28, 2016, a group called Gimaa Giigidoowin Communications (GGC) asked the CRTC for permission to take over CHYF-FM. The CRTC looked at their request and approved the change on March 21, 2017. This means GGC now helps run the station.
