History of Cañabón
How Cañabón Became Part of the U.S.
After the Spanish–American War, which ended in 1898, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. This meant that Puerto Rico was no longer controlled by Spain.
Early Population Counts
Soon after, in 1899, the United States government did a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 1,309 people lived in the Cañabón barrio at that time. Over the years, the number of people living in Cañabón has grown quite a lot!
