Cactus is a small city in Moore County, Texas, United States. It is located along U.S. Route 287. In 2020, about 3,057 people lived there.

A song called "Cactus Texas" by Waylon Jennings describes the city from many years ago.

Cactus is located in the northern part of Texas. It is about 54 miles (87 km) north of Amarillo. The city is also 13 miles (21 km) north of Dumas.

Tornado in Cactus

On April 21, 2007, a strong tornado hit Cactus. This tornado was rated as an EF2. It caused a lot of damage to the city. About one-third of Cactus homes and buildings were either damaged or completely destroyed.

Even though the damage was severe, no one was killed. However, 14 people were injured. The tornado was about a mile wide when it struck Cactus. It knocked out power and scattered debris far away. Officials were surprised that no lives were lost. This tornado was part of a larger event where 16 tornadoes hit the Texas Panhandle that day.
