Discovering Chocolate History

Cadbury started planning this special chocolate attraction in 1988. They chose their factory site in Bournville for it. Cadbury World first opened its doors on August 14, 1990. It cost about £6 million to build.

Since then, the attraction has grown and added new things. They are always making it better for visitors. The Prime Minister at the time, John Major, officially opened it in 1991.

Cadbury World is now one of Birmingham's most popular places to visit. More than 500,000 people come here every year. Lots of children and students especially love it.

The site also has a great education program. This program connects to the ideas of the company's original founders. You can even enjoy a special chocolate afternoon tea here!

What You'll See and Do

Cadbury World isn't a tour of a working chocolate factory. Instead, it lets you explore the amazing history of chocolate. You'll learn how the Cadbury business started and grew.

Today, Cadbury is part of a bigger company called Mondelez. This company is one of the largest candy makers in the world.

In 2022, a company called Merlin Entertainments took over running Cadbury World. They also run other famous attractions like Legoland and Madame Tussauds.

The Fourteen Zones of Fun

Cadbury World has 14 different areas, called zones. Each zone tells a part of the chocolate story or the Cadbury story.

You'll see cool things like:

  • Static displays (things that don't move).
  • Animatronics (robots that look like people or animals).
  • Video presentations.
  • A cinema with special effects that use your senses.
  • Interactive games and displays you can touch.
  • Live demonstrations by staff.

One of the zones is called "The Bournville Experience." It opened in 2007. This zone explains how the Bournville site developed over time. Another popular zone is "4D Chocolate Adventure," built in 2014. It has a fun 3D cinema experience.

Cadbury World in Dunedin, New Zealand

In July 2003, another Cadbury World opened in Dunedin, New Zealand. It was located at the Cadbury Factory site. This one was different from the UK one because it offered guided tours inside the actual factory.

However, the factory in Dunedin closed in 2018. Even though there were plans to keep Cadbury World open, it also closed that year. The land was needed for a new hospital. The Cadbury site was sold to the Ministry of Health.

The closure of Cadbury World in Dunedin meant that 39 people lost their jobs. During the demolition of the factory, old business records from 1899 to 1988 were found. These records belonged to a company called Hudson & Co, which joined with Cadbury in 1929.
