Mondelēz International, Inc. (pronounced MON-də-LEEZ) is a very large company from the United States. They make many popular snacks, chocolates, and drinks. You might know some of their brands like Oreo cookies or Cadbury chocolate.

This company is based in Chicago, Illinois. They sell their products in about 160 countries around the world. Mondelēz International makes chocolate, cookies, biscuits, chewing gum, candy, and powdered drinks.

The name "Mondelez" comes from the Latin word mundus, which means "world." The "delez" part is a fun way to say "delicious."

The Story of Mondelēz

Mondelēz International has a long history. It started from a company called Kraft Foods Inc., which began in Chicago in 1923.

How Kraft Foods Began

The company's roots go back to the National Dairy Products Corporation. This company was founded on December 10, 1923. It was started by Edward E. Rieck and Thomas H. McInnerney. They first focused on the ice cream business in the United States.

In 1924, the Kraft Cheese Company was created. It became a public company, meaning its shares could be bought and sold. In 1928, Kraft bought Phenix Cheese Company, which made Philadelphia Cream Cheese. After this, the company changed its name to Kraft-Phenix Cheese Company.

In 1930, National Dairy bought Kraft Phenix. The combined company kept the National Dairy name. Later, it changed its name to Kraftco Corporation in 1969, and then to Kraft Inc. in 1976. In 1995, it became Kraft Foods Inc.

Buying Cadbury

In 2009, Kraft Foods tried to buy the British candy company Cadbury. Cadbury makes popular chocolates like Cadbury Dairy Milk. At first, Cadbury said no to Kraft's offer. But in January 2010, Cadbury agreed to a new offer from Kraft. This deal was worth about $19.5 billion.

After Kraft bought Cadbury, sales for Cadbury stayed about the same. Kraft spent a lot of money to combine the two businesses. They also raised prices for some products because ingredients like sugar and cocoa became more expensive.

Becoming Mondelēz International

In August 2011, Kraft Foods announced a big plan. They decided to split into two separate companies. One company would focus on snacks and foods sold around the world. The other would handle grocery products in North America.

The snack company was named Mondelēz International. It officially became a new company in October 2012. The North American grocery business became a new company called Kraft Foods Group. Later, Kraft Foods Group joined with another company called Heinz to form Kraft Heinz.

In 2014, Mondelēz joined its coffee business with a Dutch company called Douwe Egberts. The new company was named Jacobs Douwe Egberts, which is now called JDE Peet's.

Mondelēz has continued to grow by buying other companies. In 2018, they bought Tate's Bake Shop, which makes cookies. In 2019, they acquired a company called Perfect Snacks, known for its refrigerated protein bars. In 2020, they bought Give & Go, a company that makes small baked goods.

More recently, in 2021, Mondelēz bought Hu Master Holdings. In 2022, they acquired Chipita S.A., a company known for croissants and baked snacks in Europe. They also bought Ricolino, a candy business, in 2022.

In 2022, Mondelēz also announced that it would sell its chewing gum business. This included popular brands like Trident and Dentyne. They also sold the Halls cough drop business. This sale was completed in October 2023.

Also in 2022, Mondelēz acquired Clif Bar. This added Clif, Luna, and Clif Bar Kids products to their collection of brands.
