In 1852, Francis Cadell got ready to start a new boat service on the Murray River. To prepare, he explored the river himself. He traveled an amazing 1,300 miles (about 2,092 kilometers) downstream. He started his journey from Swan Hill in a canvas boat. His explorations helped open up the river for trade and travel.
