Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Cadwallader Owen (born around 1562 – died 1617) was a Welsh clergyman from the Church of England. He was known as a debater and writer during his time.

Early Life and Education

Cadwallader Owen was born in Maentwrog, a place in Merioneth (which is now part of Gwynedd, Wales). He went to Jesus College, Oxford, one of the famous universities in England. He officially joined the university on November 24, 1581.

He worked hard and earned his first university degree, a Bachelor of Arts, in 1583. Later, in 1589, he completed his Master of Arts degree. These degrees showed he had a strong education in many subjects.

Life at Oriel College

From 1585, Cadwallader Owen was a fellow at Oriel College, Oxford. Being a fellow meant he was a senior member of the college, often involved in teaching and research. He stayed a fellow until at least 1606, which is when he got married to Blanche Roberts. In 1603, he earned another advanced degree, a Bachelor of Divinity, which is a degree in religious studies.

Career as a Clergyman

In 1608, Cadwallader Owen became the rector of Llanbrynmair, a church in Merioneth. A rector is a priest who is in charge of a parish (a local church area). This meant he was responsible for leading church services and looking after the spiritual needs of the people in Llanbrynmair.

Known for Debating

Besides his church duties, Owen was very well-known for his skills in debating. He was so good at it that he even had a special nickname: "Sic doces," which means "Thus you teach" in Latin. This shows he was a respected speaker and could argue his points very well.

Lost Writings

Cadwallader Owen also wrote many things, but sadly, his written works are no longer around today. We don't know what topics he wrote about or what his ideas were, as his writings have been lost over time.

Family and Legacy

Cadwallader Owen passed away in 1617. He was buried in his church parish on April 6, 1617.

His son, Richard Owen, also became a very important clergyman. Richard Owen held significant positions in churches in places like Eltham, St Swithin in London Stone, and North Cray. He was active both before and after the Restoration, a time when the monarchy was brought back to England after a period of civil war.
