The Caia River is a river located on the Iberian Peninsula. It flows into the Guadiana River, which is a much larger river. The Caia is one of the most important waterways in the Portalegre District in Portugal.
There is a special situation regarding the border between Portugal and Spain where the Caia River meets the Ribeira de Cuncos River. Portugal does not officially recognize the border in this specific area. This is because Spain took control of Olivenza in 1801. Even though Spain currently manages this land, Portugal still considers it legally part of its territory. Because of this, Portugal does not recognize any border in this particular spot.
Where the Caia River Flows
The Caia River begins in the Serra de São Mamede mountains. For its last 11 kilometres (7 mi), the river actually forms part of the official border between Portugal and Spain. Finally, the Caia River joins the Guadiana River. This meeting point is located southwest of the city of Badajoz in Spain.
Rivers Joining the Caia
Smaller rivers that flow into the Caia River are called tributaries. Here are the main ones:
- Arronches River, also known as the Alegrete River
- Algalé River
Dams on the Caia River
Dams are built across rivers to hold back water, often creating a reservoir or lake.
- The Caia Dam is located on this river. It creates the largest reservoir in the Portalegre District. This reservoir helps store water for various uses.
