Calakmul Ruler Y facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ruler Y was an important king of Calakmul, a powerful city in the ancient Maya world. He is also known as Ruler 8 or Bolon K'awiil I. He ruled around the year 741 AD.

Who Was Ruler Y?

Ruler Y was a leader of Calakmul, one of the biggest and most important Maya cities. Kings in the Maya civilization were seen as very powerful. They were believed to be connected to the gods. They led their people in daily life, religion, and sometimes in wars against other cities.

Monuments of Ruler Y

Ruler Y is known for several large stone monuments called stelae. These stelae are like tall stone tablets. They were carved with pictures and hieroglyphs (ancient Maya writing). They often told stories about the king's life, his victories, and important events.

The stelae linked to Ruler Y are numbers 25, 26, 27, 59, and 60. These monuments help us learn about his time as king. Some experts believe Ruler Y ordered these stelae to be made in 741 AD. However, the writing on some of them is damaged, so it's hard to be completely sure. It's even possible that his father, Wamaw K'awiil, ordered some of them.

Calakmul and Tikal: A Great Rivalry

During Ruler Y's time, Calakmul was in a long-standing rivalry with another mighty Maya city called Tikal. These two cities were often at war, fighting for power and control over the Maya lands.

The Rise of Tikal

Around the time Ruler Y was king, Tikal began to win many important battles. Earlier, kings like Jasaw Chan K'awiil (around 695 AD) and Yik'in Chan K'awiil (around 736 AD) from Tikal had defeated Calakmul in major ways.

Tikal's victories continued to weaken Calakmul's power. For example, Tikal won battles against cities allied with Calakmul, like El Peru in 743 AD and Naranjo in 744 AD. These defeats greatly reduced Calakmul's influence and control over the region. This period marked the end of Calakmul's long-held power in the Maya world.
