Calangianus is a town in the Sardinia region of Italy. It is located about 190 kilometers (118 miles) north of Cagliari and about 25 kilometers (16 miles) west of Olbia. Calangianus is famous for its many cork forests. Because of this, it is often called the "Cork's Capital."

History of Calangianus

The area around Calangianus has been home to people for a very long time. People lived here even during the Bronze Age, which was thousands of years ago. Later, the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire also settled here.

We know this because many old things and archaeological sites have been found. These include the Tombs of the Giants of Pascaredda, which are ancient burial sites. There is also a fountain called "Li Paladini" and nine "nuraghi." Nuraghi are ancient stone towers built by the Nuragic civilization in Sardinia. Sadly, five of these nuraghi are now destroyed.

In the Middle Ages, Calangianus was part of a kingdom called the Giudicato of Gallura. After that, it was ruled by the Aragonese and then the Spanish Empire. In the 1600s, many people moved to Calangianus. This happened after several sicknesses had caused the population in Sardinia to drop. Calangianus then became the second-largest city in Gallura by population. In 1771, it became an independent town.

In the early 1800s, some business people came to Calangianus. They realized that the cork forests could bring a lot of money to the town. Over time, almost everyone in Calangianus started working with cork.

The 1900s were a big turning point for Calangianus's economy. In the second half of that century, Calangianus had about 300 cork factories. By 2012, this number had grown to 677!

Calangianus held its first cork exhibition in 1977. In 1987, it was named one of the hundred most industrialized towns in Italy.
