History of Calasetta
The town of Calasetta was officially started in 1770. But its story began much earlier, in the mid-1500s. At that time, many families from Pegli, a town near Genoa in Ligurian, moved to a deserted island. This island was off the coast of Tunisia, near the city of Tabarka.
Coral Fishing and Trade
These families went to Tabarka to fish for coral. They worked for a rich family from Genoa called the Lomellini. The Ligurian families, known as Tabarkini, were very good at business. They soon started trading goods between Africa and Europe. They became very successful and were even given the title of Marquis of Tabarka.
Challenges and New Homes
At first, the Tabarkini were protected by the Spanish king. But over time, their population grew, and they faced problems. Pirates from North Africa, called Barbary pirates, attacked them. Also, France wanted to expand its power, which caused more trouble for the Tabarkini.
In 1738, some Tabarkini decided to leave the island near Tunisia for good. King Charles Emmanuel III of Savoy, who ruled the Kingdom of Sardinia, welcomed them. He gave them the Island of San Pietro to live on.
However, the Bey of Tunis (a ruler in Tunisia) found out that the Lomellini family planned to give control of the island to the French. So, he attacked the island. Homes and warehouses were destroyed, and many people were captured.
Founding Calasetta
After being freed, some Tabarkini settled in Carloforte, on San Pietro Island. Others were allowed to settle on the empty island of Sant'Antioco. This is how the village of Calasetta began. In 1773, more people from Piedmont (a region in Italy) wanted to settle in Calasetta. But they faced illness and tough conditions, so they soon returned home.
Culture and Language
The people of Calasetta speak a special local language called Tabarkino. This language is still very similar to the dialect spoken in Pegli and Genoa today. It shows the strong connection to their ancestors from Liguria.
Economy and Tourism
Today, Calasetta is a popular place for tourists. It has beautiful beaches where people can relax and swim. There is also a port, which is important for boats and ships. Fishing is another important industry in Calasetta, providing fresh seafood.
