Caleb Jay Jones (born June 6, 1997) is an American professional ice hockey player. He plays as a defenseman, which is a player who helps protect his team's goal. Caleb currently plays for the Ontario Reign in the American Hockey League (AHL). He is also signed with the Los Angeles Kings in the top league, the National Hockey League (NHL). The Edmonton Oilers picked him in the 2015 NHL Draft. He has also played for the Oilers, Chicago Blackhawks, and Colorado Avalanche.
Caleb's Hockey Journey
Caleb Jones started playing junior hockey with the Portland Winterhawks. This is a league for younger, talented players. He also played for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program. This program helps train future U.S. hockey stars.
In 2015, the Edmonton Oilers chose Caleb in the NHL Draft. This is when professional teams pick young players to join their organization. He signed his first professional contract with them in 2016.
Caleb continued playing for the Winterhawks for a couple more seasons. He also got a chance to play a few games with the Oilers' "farm team," the Bakersfield Condors. Farm teams are where younger players develop their skills before joining the main NHL team.
He played a full season with the Condors in 2017–18. Then, in December 2018, Caleb was called up to play for the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL. He played his very first NHL game on December 14 against the Philadelphia Flyers.
In 2021, Caleb was traded from the Oilers to the Chicago Blackhawks. He played for the Blackhawks for two seasons.
After the 2022–23 season, Caleb became a free agent. This means he could sign with any team. He first signed with the Carolina Hurricanes in August 2023. However, before playing a regular game for them, he was traded to the Colorado Avalanche in October. He also played for the Avalanche's farm team, the Colorado Eagles.
After one season with the Avalanche, Caleb became a free agent again. In July 2024, he signed a contract with the Los Angeles Kings. He will play for their AHL team, the Ontario Reign, and can also be called up to the Kings.
About Caleb's Family
Caleb has an older brother named Seth Jones. Seth is also a professional hockey defenseman! Their father is Popeye Jones, who used to be a professional basketball player in the NBA. Caleb was born in Arlington, Texas, when his dad was playing for the Dallas Mavericks.
